Casino Hotels

These four hotels are in Canada rather than Germany, and they are here for the same reason as everything else on this site: the buildings are worth comparing. The first of them occupies pavilions built for a world exposition. The others are resorts shaped by a gorge, a river and a lake. We describe the hotel, the rooms, the restaurants and the concert halls. The gaming floor is neither described nor assessed.

The hotel

This hotel and casino occupies the pavilions built for Expo 67 on Île Notre-Dame, in the middle of the St Lawrence. The architecture is the reason it is in this comparison. The former French pavilion is a sculptural structure of angled surfaces, and the interior rises through several levels around open voids, so the plan reads vertically rather than as a set of floors. The Québec pavilion stands beside it and is joined to the same complex. Around the buildings is Parc Jean-Drapeau, an island park with water on all sides and the Montréal skyline across it. The complex includes several restaurants, among them a gastronomic one, and a regular programme of live performances. The hotel section is part of the same site. Being on an island shapes the whole stay: the setting is calm and open, and every trip into the city crosses a bridge.

The hotel

Fallsview Casino Resort was built in the early 2000s on the rim of the Niagara gorge, directly above the falls. The site does most of the work. The building steps down the slope, so the public levels sit high over the water and the main outlook is straight across the gorge. Restaurants along that side use the view as their subject, and the higher rooms face the same direction. Inside there is a theatre that receives touring names through the year, a spa, and a range of restaurants across several levels. The resort is part of the dense tourist strip on the Canadian side of the falls, which is a built-up area of hotels and attractions rather than a quiet one. That density is the trade: everything is within a short walk, and the streets and public areas stay busy well into the evening, particularly at weekends and in summer.

One stands minutes from an international airport on the edge of Vancouver. The other sits on lake country land more than an hour from Toronto.

The hotel

River Rock Casino Resort stands on the water in Richmond, on the edge of the Vancouver area, with its own marina at the foot of the site. The building faces the river, and the resort is arranged so that the hotel, the restaurants and the concert hall sit within one complex rather than spread across a campus. The show theatre is a full-scale venue and runs a regular programme. There is a spa, and the restaurants cover several styles, including the Asian cooking that Richmond as a city is known for. The location is flat delta land at the mouth of the Fraser, so the outlook is water, boats and low sky rather than mountains, although the North Shore ranges are visible on clear days. Vancouver International Airport is a few minutes away and the SkyTrain runs into central Vancouver, which makes this the most connected address of the four.

The hotel

Casino Rama Resort stands on the land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, beside Lake Couchiching in central Ontario. It is owned and hosted by the First Nation, and that is part of what the place is rather than a detail added to it. The resort is arranged low and wide across its site, with the hotel, restaurants and spa on one plan and a large concert hall attached to the same complex. That hall is the main draw outside the building itself: it is a full touring venue, and the programme runs through the year. Around the resort is Ontario lake country, with water, woodland and golf within easy reach, and the town of Orillia nearby. This is a landscape of holiday cottages and long weekends rather than a city. The road is the way in, and the drive from Toronto takes roughly an hour and a half.

Hard to reach without a car.
